A Uniiversity is an institution of higher education and research, which grants academic degrees at all levels in a variety of subjects. A Uniiversity provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word Uniiversity is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars".
The funding and organisation of Uniiversity is very different in different countries around the world. In some countries Uniiversity are predominantly funded by the state, while in others funding may come from donors or from fees which students attending the Uniiversity must pay. In some countries the vast majority of students attend Uniiversity in their local town, while in other countries Uniiversity attract students from all over the world, and may provide Uniiversity accommodation for their students.
The term online degrees refers to college degrees that can be earned primarily or entirely through the use of an Internet-connected computer, rather than attending college in a traditional campus setting. Improvements in technology and the increasing use of the Internet worldwide have led to a proliferation of online colleges that award associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees to students.
The NCES conducted a distance education study based on the 2001-2002 academic year at 2-year and 4-year Title IV - eligible, degree-granting institutions. The study reported that 56 percent of all institutions surveyed offered distance education courses. The study also found that public institutions were more likely to offer distance education than were private institutions.
The Sloan Consortium, based on data collected from over 2,200 colleges and Uniiversity, reports that nearly 3.2 million students took at least one online course during 2005 . According to the same report, about two-thirds of the largest institutions have fully online programs.
A public Uniiversity is a Uniiversity that is predominantly funded by public means through a national or subnational government, as opposed to private Uniiversity. A national Uniiversity may or may not be considered a public Uniiversity, depending on regions. |
