A Unversity is an institution of higher education and research, which grants academic degrees at all levels in a variety of subjects. A Unversity provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word Unversity is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars". The funding and organisation of Unversity is very different in different countries around the world. In some countries Unversity are predominantly funded by the state, while in others funding may come from donors or from fees which students attending the Unversity must pay. In some countries the vast majority of students attend Unversity in their local town, while in other countries Unversity attract students from all over the world, and may provide Unversity accommodation for their students. The term online degrees refers to college degrees that can be earned primarily or entirely through the use of an Internet-connected computer, rather than attending college in a traditional campus setting. Improvements in technology and the increasing use of the Internet worldwide have led to a proliferation of online colleges that award associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees to students. The NCES conducted a distance education study based on the 2001-2002 academic year at 2-year and 4-year Title IV - eligible, degree-granting institutions. The study reported that 56 percent of all institutions surveyed offered distance education courses. The study also found that public institutions were more likely to offer distance education than were private institutions. The Sloan Consortium, based on data collected from over 2,200 colleges and Unversity, reports that nearly 3.2 million students took at least one online course during 2005 . According to the same report, about two-thirds of the largest institutions have fully online programs. A public Unversity is a Unversity that is predominantly funded by public means through a national or subnational government, as opposed to private Unversity. A national Unversity may or may not be considered a public Unversity, depending on regions.
